The Aldbrough St John website

The Aldbrough Watch Magazine and this website were in recent years supported financially by the Parish Council until it became impractical for them to do so.  I created the Aldbrough St John website in 1996 whilst I was the Parish Constable, first as a neighbourhood watch and information site for use of the villagers themselves and incorporated the information produced monthly in the "Aldbrough Watch"  - the neighbourhood watch magazine which I produced and delivered free to every house in the village.  In 1998, due to petty jealousies by supervising regular officers at Richmond Police Station who didn't want specials to do any real work in case it made them look bad;  made life intolerable for an unpaid volunteer and so, due to extremely bad and inefficient management by North Yorkshire Police, I resigned as Parish Constable.  I decided that the website should continue, although the magazine had to cease as in the end, I  was bearing all of the production and photocopying costs.

All of the information on this website has been drawn together by me from village sources and consequently, whilst the content is provided with the best intent, there is no guarantee that it is definitive.  Main contributors of articles and information have been Ian Wardle, past chairman of the Aldbrough PC, Sam Crooks, secretary of the feast Committee, Allen Clifford, local historian,  Col.George Barnley RA. MBE and Robbie Gill, both of the latter now sadly deceased.

Many exciting developments have and are taking place around the village and will be reported in these pages as they progress.

The book "Aldbrough, Stanwick and Carlton - The Story of Our Village" by the late R.J.Gill has been reproduced in full and as the book is now over 20 years old; with the consent of John Gill, Robbie's son, I have begun a revision, all of the changes to date appearing in the text, together with many new photographs which will continue to be added as I go along.

Since its creation, the website has developed into a site with an international audience and annually serves many thousands of visitors from all over the world. This is the latest version of the site, created on 10 Sept 2004 and which went live on 15 Sept 2004. Present hits count is only since 15 Sept 04
