Count Alan of Brittany - the son in law of William 1st.    He was also Earl of Richmond.  The Head of Brettons in England.  He held large land holdings in Yorkshire and 12 other counties. Was probably the eighth or nineth largest landholder after the King.

ALDEBURNE (Aldbrough St. John) held by Enisan from Count Alan. The holding described thus; 'in demense one plough and eleven villans and three bordars with six ploughs; there are four acres of meadow, a mill and a church.    The whole is one lenga in length and one broad. In the time of King Edward (Confessor) it was worth 40 shillings; now ?4  (Unusually improved in this short period).

RAVENESU (Ravensworth) held by Bodin from Count Alan.

STENWEGHE/STEINWEGES (Stanwick held by Count Alan.

STAPLEDUN (Stapleton) held by Enison from Count Alan.

LASTUN    (West Layton) held by Count Alan.

NOTE: Nine of the villages that surround Aldbrough St. John were held by the Count himself.   Were they perhaps, administered for him by Enison, who by his holdings must have been one of Count Alan's More trusted knights?
