The following is in
no way intended to be an authoritative work, and as a novice, I am quite

Aldbrough?
In 1533, John Leland
received a royal commission from Henry Tudor "to make a search after England's
Antiquities, and peruse the Libraries of all Cathedrals, Abbies, Priories,
Colleges, etc. as also all places wherein Records, Writings and secrets of
Antiquity were reposed." and from 1539 - 1545 Leland toured Britain, reporting
all he saw. When visiting Aldbrough, he reported in his diary "a
ruined castle" by a beck.[1]
