The Story of Our Village

"Robbie" Gill wrote his original book " Aldbrough, Stanwick and Carlton - The Story of our Village", some twenty odd years ago and much has happened, changed and been discovered since then. Since Robbie's death, his son John Gill kindly agreed that additions to the original work should be made and I have attempted to add to his work simply because, as Robbie himself said, his was never meant to be an authoritative work on the subject.   Like Robbie, my additions and revisions are as accurate as possible, but not meant to be definitive.

Grant Rowley. 2003

In writing these notes I have tried to be as accurate as possible. I have neither the facilities nor the time for serious research. It is written for the benefit of those who have come to live in the village in the post war era, and who are interested in its past. So few of the pre-war residents still remain, and fewer still are natives. I hope that at least some may find this book helps them to understand more and appreciate the environment in which they live.

I am indebted to many friends who have helped me by advice and encouragement. Without them, it would never have got off the ground.
